West Kent Golf Club near Downe, Kent hosted their very first Speedgolf Open Competition with some amazing results. The winner was amateur George Boxall who is a member at the club, he shot just 79 in 39 minutes, 30 seconds for the 18 hole round, a very fast time and only a few over PAR on this challenging undulating course. His Speedgolf score which combines the two was 118:30. George has been 3rd for the last two years at the British Speedgolf Open Championships and is getting FASTER so one to watch.
Equally impressive was Ben Greenhalgh, a golf pro and footballer, but a complete novice to Speedgolf, he shot an impressive 74 in just over 45 minutes to take the runner up position.
The top 10 men all completed the 18 holes in under an hour playing off the yellow (PAR 71). Many completely new to the sport were astounded to record rounds with strokes close to their regular golf game.
Amateur golfer Steve Jeffs, who competed in the 2016 World Speedgolf Championships completed his round carrying just 2 clubs but still finished 3rd shooting 82 in 46 mins 30 secs for a score of 128:30.
Two women competed off the Red tees and the winner Mariette Hilborne relatively new to golf, proved how her passion for Speedgolf is matched by her determination to hone her golf skills. In 2015 at the British Speedgolf Open she shot 122 in 65 mins 39 seconds (SGS =187:39) , but here she has bought this down to 95 shots in 64:02 giving her a Speedgolf Score of 159:02; fantastic progress and a real inspiration.
Speedgolf is not all about speed, it is a sport for all ages and abilities. Leisure golfer Stuart Hunter drove from Newmarket just to try the sport. Despite the faster pace, he put in his best ever 18 hole round golf score, shooting 106 in just over 86 minutes but thoroughly enjoyed the experience as you can see! David Hudson shot a birdie on the 13th to win the nearest to pin challenge. More evidence to illustrate Speedgolf can aid rather than diminish golf performance.
The 15 who competed all finished the 18 hole round and all in under 80 minutes. Full results below
